Ohawini Bay is immediately north of Oakura Bay and access is obtained by driving along the beach at low tide. The absence of roads enables an absolute waterfront location. The bay is at the entrance to the Whangaruru harbour which provides a sheltered anchorage and easy boat launching. The beach is white sand and the harbour protection makes it ideal for safe swimming, snorkelling and water sports. Oakura Bay 2 minutes south has surfing waves if that is what is wanted. The area is relatively undeveloped and there are miles of isolated sea shore and bush clad hills in the immediate vicinity for hiking or mountain biking.
